Nodal Exchange posted a record Q1 volume with 132,233 contracts traded, up 95% from the first three-month period a year earlier. Open interest at the end of Q1 was 320,305 lots, up 42% from 226,306 lots a year earlier. Environmental markets on Nodal also hit a new open interest record during the quarter of 327,370 lots and surpassed that record last week, just under 330,000 contracts. For the quarter, Nodal Exchange set a new monthly record in environmental markets in February of 50,085 lots, an all-time monthly high, and then posted a March record of 35,811 lots. These records highlight the work that Nodal and IncubEx have done to build these markets since November 2018. Nodal lists the largest suite of environmental products with more than 120 futures and options across carbon, RECs, renewable fuel credits and emissions. Start-up commodity venues face 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity Dan Scarbrough, President and COO of IncubEx and Clive Furness, Chief Executive of Contango Markets discussed the potential for new commodities classes at the FOW Trading London event this week. Furness said “In the exchange world, we see a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for start-up exchanges and emerging exchanges in the commodities market. As we approach the end of the decade, there's a level playing field for new players." For several environmental markets, there is indeed great potential for newcomers. IncubEx's collaboration with Nodal Exchange, for example, has created the largest suite of listed environmental markets across carbon, renewable energy certificates and renewable fuel credits. Many of the new environmental commodities are products listed for the first time such as voluntary (hybrid voluntary/compliance) RECs or physically-delivered Low-Carbon Fuel Standard contracts. Scarbrough said "The cornerstone lies in customer connectivity, building relationships and actively engaging with stakeholders in the market." On Wednesday, the CFTC hosted 30+ government and market-participant speakers at its 2nd voluntary carbon markets convening. In addition to discussing the evolution of voluntary carbon market and how to scale the VCM globally, speakers shared their diverse thoughts on how to improve the VCM. First WCA Options Traded on Nodal Exchange Yesterday, the Washington Carbon Allowance (WCA) market posted the first WCA options trade on Nodal Exchange and a new record daily volume of 565 contracts (equal to 565,000 WCAs). WCA options enable market participants to manage their risk and volatility, providing greater flexibility and opportunities around compliance needs and price fluctuations. In collaboration with IncubEx, Nodal listed the first WCA futures and WCA options contracts, which correspond with the Washington “Cap-and-Invest” program, the newest carbon market in North America. The program, which began on January 1, 2023, will gradually cover about 75% of the state's CO2 emissions.
