Looking forward to seeing many friends and colleagues this week at the 42nd annual Options Industry Conference. I'm honored to kick things off with some thought provoking data- including this look at how dramatically different the execution method is for SPX #0DTE volume (98% electronic!) vs longer-term options (63%). With 5 trading floors today and one more expected to open in Miami in August, I am excited to hear many expert opinions on how and why floors meet the needs of some participants, while others trade millions of contracts daily without ever picking up the phone. 58.6M option contracts traded Friday in US markets, marking the 3rd busiest day of the year and 12th busiest day ever. Notably, Cboe Global Markets VIX option volume hit a 6 year high of 2.61M contracts as volatility spiked to the highest level since November. Volume and change data for VIX sourced from datashop.cboe.com shows the clear relationship between upside moves in VIX and higher option volume. A similar plot for ETF and single stock options shows higher volume on the larger moves regardless of direction. Total volume set a record in Q1 as single stocks roared back to life while index and ETF activity held steady.
