A company trying to open the first Scottish stock exchange in decades has appointed two senior members of staff.

Elaine Morton joins Project Heather as its chief regulatory and compliance officer with Helen Webster hired as its chief operating officer. The previous Scottish Stock Exchange merged with its London counterpart in 1973. Attempts to re-establish a Scottish bourse have not borne fruit.

Project Heather, headed by Tomas Carruthers, 52, hopes to launch an exchange towards the end of this year if it gets regulatory approval. It has agreed a lease for a headquarters in Edinburgh and received a government grant worth up to £750,000 to help it to hire staff.

Euronext, which runs the Paris securities market, has been lined up to operate the exchange
