Florence is expanding on its relentless advance toward North Carolina, promising to deliver days of drenching rain from what may be the most powerful hurricane to hit the state in 64 years.

The storm, which is still more than 700 miles (1,125 kilometers) from the coast, is expected to make landfall late Thursday or early Friday and then stall, dropping as much as 30 inches of rain on North Carolina. The storm may trigger “catastrophic flash flooding,” according to the National Weather Service, and a storm surge of as much as 13 feet (4 meters).
