Eric "Rick" Bruce Peterson died on Thursday, July 12th, at his home in Evanston, IL after recently overcoming leukemia. He was 63. A week prior, with his cancer in remission and having just finished chemotherapy, Rick displayed optimism. He was looking forward to getting back on deck to cheer on his swimmers.
Rick was born in 1955 in Niagara Falls, New York, son of Lillian Hruda Peterson and Richard Allen Peterson. Rick grew up in North Star, Delaware. A graduate of Alexis I. duPont High School and Bucknell University, Rick started his coaching career at the North Star Swim Club. Rick went on to excel at influencing the lives of thousands of students and swimmers. He taught Civics, American History, and Geography at New Trier High School for a few years. He coached several local swim teams including New Trier, Old Willow Club, and Glenview Titan Aquatic Club.
Rick also had a successful 15-year trading career starting in the 1980s, first in the S&P futures "pit" at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange followed by the U.S. Treasuries bond futures "pit" at the Chicago Board of Trade.
Rick’s book “The Art of Coaching Young Athletes” expanded his concept of maturing the athlete through swimming. He is remembered with overwhelmingly positive stories told by those who knew him in his family and community. Rick is survived by his three step children, four siblings and numerous grandchildren.
Rick embodied his “high-quality coaching method” of demonstrating a "respectful, caring connection and attitude" towards all his athletes, family and friends to in turn assist people with “evolving positively in life.”
Financial gifts to Rick in recent months will go towards his medical bills. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Rick’s memory to the Ted Mullin Fund and NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center.
On Saturday, July 28th from 9am-12noon a public visitation will be held at Wm.H.Scott Funeral Home (directions: 847 251-8200) located at 1100 Greenleaf Avenue in Wilmette, IL. Private interment service will be at Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago.
Arrangements entrusted to Evanston Funeral & Cremation, Roland F. Weis director. Info 847 866-8843, condolence and guestbook at evanstonfuneral.com
