- Despite unfavourable conditions on the global financial markets, the WSE broke new records of market activity in 2011: over PLN 250 billion of session trading in shares (+21.1% YoY) and over 15.5 million derivative instruments traded (+5.6% YoY);
- High double-digit growth of the volume of trading in single-stock futures, currency futures, index options, and structured products in 2011;
- Value of issues on the Catalyst market (PLN 40 billion) up by 85.6% in 2011, the number of transactions up by 25%; Treasury BondSpot Poland reported more than PLN 1 trillion of total trading in Treasury securities;
- In the first year after the harmonisation of trading session hours with the international standards, the average number of transactions per session (Main Market) up by 14.2%;
- Monthly value of session trading in shares in December at PLN 15.1 billion, the volume of trading in derivatives over 1.0 million instruments.

Main Market
In the past year, the Main Market grew at a double-digit rate, both in terms of the value of trading and the number of transactions. The average daily value of session trading was close to PLN 1.0 billion, as compared to PLN 0.8 billion in 2010 (an increase of 22.0%); the average number of transactions per session was over 55 thousand, an increase of 14.2% year on year.
The value of session trading on the Main Market at PLN 15.1 billion in December 2011 decreased by 12.3% year on year (PLN 17.2 billion in December 2010). The average daily value of trading in December was PLN 718.4 million in December 2011, as compared to PLN 782.4 million in December 2010. The incremental value of session trading year to date was PLN 250.7 billion, an increase of 21.1% year on year and the highest annual figure in the history of the WSE.
The WIG index lost 20.8% year on year at the end of December 2011.
NewConnect
The number of transactions on NewConnect increased by 22.7% to 1.1 million in 2011, as compared to 13.9 million transactions in 2011 on the WSE Main Market. The average number of transactions per session increased from 3.5 thousand in 2010 to 4.3 thousand in 2011 (an increase of 23.8%). The value of session trading increased by 5.6% to PLN 1.9 billion in January-December 2011, which was the highest value in the history of the market. Session trading was PLN 94.8 million in December 2011, as compared to PLN 200.3 million in December 2010.
The NCIndex lost 34.4% year on year at the end of December 2011.
Derivative instruments
The total volume of trading in futures contracts and options exceeded 15.5 million instruments in 2011, the highest ever in the history of the WSE. In all of 2011, with a low positive change in the volume of trading in index futures (+1.2% YoY), the fast growth of trading in single-stock futures and currency futures resulted in a significant increase of their share in the overall volume of trading in derivative instruments.
Futures contracts: The monthly volume of trading in index futures was 1.1 million contracts in December 2011, an increase of 5.7% year on year. The volume of trading in single-stock futures in January-December 2011 was 737.7 thousand instruments and nearly doubled year on year (+96.5%). In December 2011, the monthly trading volume increased by 29.3% year on year.
The year-on-year growth of trading in December was the highest for currency futures: it increased by 72.6% to 16.6 thousand contracts. The incremental volume of trading in currency futures in 2011 increased by 67.5% to nearly 200 thousand contracts.
Options: The incremental volume of trading in options year to date was nearly 900 thousand, an increase of 33.0% year on year. The volume of trading was 35.8 thousand in December 2011, as compared to 66.8 thousand in December 2010.
Structured products, investment certificates and ETF
Structured products and investment certificates: Following the introduction to trading of a number of new products, the value of trading in investment certificates and structured products crossed the mark of PLN 0.5 billion in 2011 (structured products: PLN 350.8 million; investment certificates: PLN 169.1 million). The incremental value of trading in structured products year to date increased by 22.8% and the value of trading in certificates increased by 57.6% year on year.
In December, the WSE expanded the range of offered structured products by introducing to trading 31 series of knock-out certificates based on the WIG20 index and prices of nine instruments listed on the WSE.
ETF: The value of trading in ETFs was PLN 284.3 million in 2011, as compared to PLN 85.1 million in 2010.2 The value of trading was PLN 15.4 million in December 2011, as compared to PLN 29.4 million in December 2010.
Fixed-income instruments
Catalyst
The value of listed bond issues (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) was PLN 37.3 billion at the end of December 2011, an increase of 73.1% year on year. The total number of transactions in 2011 was almost 30 thousand, an increase of 25.0% year on year. The value of session trading was PLN 103.2 million in December 2011 and PLN 1.2 billion in January – December 2011, as compared to PLN 215.8 million in December 2010 and PLN 1.5 billion in January – December 2010.
Treasury BondSpot Poland
2011 was a year of dynamic growth of trading on Treasury BondSpot Poland. The total value of trading (cash and conditional transactions) crossed the mark of PLN 1 trillion, which represents a triple-digit growth rate for both types of transactions. The incremental value of cash transactions in January-December increased by 126.3% year on year and crossed PLN 300 billion; the value of conditional transactions grew by 288.6%. The monthly value of cash transactions increased by 50.5% year on year and reached PLN 20.4 billion. The value of conditional transactions decreased from PLN 30.6 billion to PLN 26.2 billion (down by 14.5%).
The WSE held 21 trading sessions in December 2011, one less than in December 2010.
