- Retail investors continue accounting for most information requests
- Enquiries about corporate Relevant Facts are the most common, due to their price-sensitive nature
“Owing to the financial crisis, not only are investors interested in and enquire about the Relevant Facts of listed companies, but they also demand information about the security of any instrument in which they invest their savings”, explained Carlos Fernández, Investor Ombudsman for the Madrid Stock Exchange at the presentation of the 2012 Report.
In the protection service section there was a significant increase, of nearly 50% from the previous year, in the number of claims that were handled, at 22. Taking as the basis the total number of written reports handled by the Ombudsman, it is worth noting that he acted more as a source of information and knowledge than as a referee, with an increase in the number of contentious enquiries in the agreements reached.
“It is worth mentioning the large number of claims filed with the Ombudsman in connection with matters outside his jurisdiction, which he is not entitled to handle. These represent 18% of the total number of claims”, he added.
As regards the informative function of the Ombudsman, private investors were, as in the last few years, the leading requesters of information, accounting for 78% of all requests. Contributing to this is the fact that financial firms, state bodies, the Spanish stock market regulator, the Bank of Spain and consumer protection organisations, refer retail investors to the Ombudsman, as they regard this figure as a quick and neutral source of information.
