EPA Lag on Power Plant Pollution Spurs NRDC Call for Action

President Barack Obama could cut greenhouse-gas emissions from U.S. power plants 26 percent by 2020, the Natural Resources Defense Council said in a plan that puts pressure on the administration to issue new rules.
Obama can use his authority under the Clean Air Act to clamp down existing polluters in a cost-effective way, the NRDC said in a report today. These emitters, which include Southern Co. and Duke Energy Corp., are the biggest sources of U.S. carbon-dioxide pollution, with power plants fueled by coal, oil and natural gas making up one-third of total emissions.
