JPMorgan Chase is naming Joseph A. Walker as senior vice chairman of its investment banking unit, according to an internal e-mail obtained by DealBook.

Mr. Walker, who previously spent 22 years working at JPMorgan before leaving the firm in 2001, will be based in New York and will start later this month.

Mr. Walker previously had worked at JPMorgan, both in Asia and in New York. He co-led the bank’s mergers and acquisitions business in the late 1990s and was the firm’s global head of technology, media and telecommunications investment banking from 1998 to 2000.

After leaving JPMorgan in 2001, Mr. Walker became a senior adviser to General Motors, and later co-founded the advisory firm KW Advisors.

“I am delighted that Joe has decided to return to JPMorgan,” James E. Staley, chief executive of the investment bank, said in the memo. “Respected by clients and peers, Joe’s extensive experience and talent is a great addition to our senior ranks.”

The move comes as JPMorgan Chase continues to face scrutiny over multibillion-dollar trading losses in its chief investment office. The losses have already claimed a number of executives, including Ina Drew, the bank’s chief investment officer, and led to a series of investigations by regulators.
