Last year, someone at the Board of Trade riled up Occupy Chicago and other activists by showering the corner of LaSalle and Jackson with leaflets and signage in the windows championing their 1 percent status. This week, activists have been countering that rhetoric with some of their own. A group of protesters calling themselves the “99 Percent Tax Enforcers” attempted to give a “tax bill” to CME Chairman Emeritus Leo Melamed at Northwestern University to pass along to CME Chair Terrance Duffy at a ribbon cutting ceremony Melamed was at. They also handed out posters claiming that Duffy is wanted for tax dodging.

Additionally, the squad of “tax enforcers” have targeted Bank of America branches in the loop, attempting to get a tax bill and wanted for tax dodging posters into the hands of CEO Brian Moynihan. CME Group higher ups have been the target of multiple protests since the Illinois Legislature handed out massive tax breaks to them and other large corporations last year. CEO Craig Donahue was “mic checked” last week by Occupy Chicago protesters last week, and Duffy received a golden toilet in January. The current actions are part of an effort by Stand Up Chicago to send a message to “rich corporations and individuals who fail to pay their share” leading up to tax day on April 17.
