Peruvian Minister of Economy and Finance Alonso Segura affirmed there is optimism about Peru’s ability to remain in the emerging-market category and considered as productive the meeting with Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) representatives in New York.

At the gathering, he spoke about the strengths of the Peruvian economy and the work currently undertaken by the Government to make the stock market more competitive.

Among the measures taken to promote the sector, he mentioned the Factoring Law and the establishment of real state income funds.

Segura also highlighted the Law to Support the Liquidity and Integration of the Stock Exchange, which eliminates income taxes on capital gains.

“We have provided important arguments that support the Peruvian position (of emerging market), but the decision will be announced by the end of this month,” he commented.

Lima Stock Exchange (BVL) representatives presented their medium term plans, too.

Segura said MSCI officials found a united front put up by the Peruvian delegation, since the meeting saw the participation of public-private sector members.

“The Peruvian Stock Exchange has to remain in the MSCI emerging-market category. We are optimistic about that,” he added.

Segura clarified the MSCI assessment is not about Peru’s macro-economic performance or country risk.

“It is a specific evaluation of the stock exchange operations. We believe Peru meets all the requirements to keep the emerging market status,” he told RPP radio and TV station.

In this sense, he said, the review process focuses on the stock market and its liquidity.

MSCI is a private index provider and a reference to investors seeking to invest in different world’s stock exchanges.
