Financial markets suspend trading in light of papal visit

Philippine financial markets are closed Thursday in light of Pope Francis' visit to the country from January 15 to 19.

Trading on the Philippine Stock Exchange were suspended Thursday and Friday, and will resume Monday, January 19.

Pope Francis is the third pope to grace the country—a much awaited event for most Filipinos.

The first was Pope Paul VI who arrived in 1970 as part of a journey to the Far East and the Pacific.

He was followed Pope John Paul II, who visited the country twice, first in 1981 for the beatification of St. Lorenzo Ruiz and another in 1995 for World Youth Day. —Danessa O. Rivera/KG, GMA News
